THE BEGINNING
The Indian Institution of Production Engineers (IIPE) was started in April 1977 with the support of the then Indian Council of the Institution of Production Engineers, London, and was registered at New Delhi.
Around early 1977, the Indian Council of the Institution of Production Engineers (UK) had been contemplating for sometime then, to form a more autonomous "INDIAN Institution of Production Engineers" on similar lines as the Institutions of Production Engineers of other countries like South Africa. The major reason for such a move was the rigid criteria insisted upon by the I.Prod.E headquarters at London, on account of which many of the excellent Indian Engineering Institutions and Universities were not recognized. Because of this, many eminent and qualified Indian production engineers could not become corporate members of the UK institution.
It was therefore thought wise and proper that we in India, should have our own institution to have a forum for our production engineers. To achieve this objective and to draw up a memorandum of association of the society, and to get it registered in India, the Indian Council appointed a special committee headed by the late Mr. M.M.Suri (inventor of Suri Transmission).
And the proud moment was realized on the 30th of April 1977, with the certificate of registration bearing number 8570 being issued by the Registrar of Societies, Delhi Administration, New Delhi, signalling the birth of the INDIAN INSTITUTION OF PRODUCTION ENGINEERS.

THE TREE TAKES ROOTS
All Indian members of I.Prod.E (UK) automatically became the first members of IIPE including eminent engineers like Dr.S.M.Patil, Shri. R.K.Gajji, Maj. Gen. P.R.Kumar, Shri S.K.Maini, and Prof. V.C.Venkatesh, who guided and inspired the institution in its formative stages.
As soon as the certification of registration was received, it was resolved that the Bangalore regional office of I.Prod.E would be activated as the first regional office of IIPE, under the pioneering stewardship of Dr.S.M.Patil, as its first Regional President. Since then, Bangalore has became the hub of all major activities of the IIPE, and over the years emerged to house the national headquarters of IIPE.
IIPE presently, has Centres in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mysore and Nashik. In 1990 I.Prod.E (London) was renamed Institution of Manufacturing Engineers and it merged with the Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK), IEE (UK), on 1st October 1991. Indian Institution of Production Engineers continues to have close links with IEE (UK) with regard to accessing latest technical inputs from them, in the field of manufacturing.
